It isn't the 12 Hour production car race it was in the 1990's and this new version is already a far more respected event than the old production car event was anyway so I doubt anyone is too hung up on any old traditions. This is now a sports car dominated race and the spectacle you will get from a standing start with drivers used to rolling starts will be good until half the field is wiped out on the first lap. Not what I'd like to see as a fan. Worst case scenario I know but some sports car racers haven't had a standing start in their whole career, especially US drivers.
I understand the spectacle of a standing start, it is such a big moment in the 1000, but our drivers do it every race. That is normally why the local drivers start. Don't forget what happened in the Gold Coast a couple of years back. As it was, I arrived at the 12 Hour at 9am this year and they were already down a Nissan, 2 x Ferraris and a Lamborghini at that stage.
