Why? In days past, with overseas GP drivers more than happy to come along for the occasional Tasman race, it added value.
The GP is important and just happens to be included in the TRS, but it doesn't have to be. The difference is that in earlier years, it appears that you could run cars that didn't all conform to the same formula and it was probably all the richer for it!
Certainly, there was never a demand for a driver to compete elsewhere first.
