Actually, if it's done to me, WVM, it generally raises my hackles even more. I'm being thanked for something that was totally outside my will.
The one hand gesture that has dissipated a situation for me - as the aggrieved party - was the driver who once chopped me, and then made a signal of raising a pointed finger to the temple of his head and made as to pull a trigger...
"Sorry mate, I should be shot for that..." It's tricky to know how to get an apology across from one car to another. But that came pretty close for me.
