You have to remember that with the LMP2s getting a BHP bump up to about 600bhp, Rebellion estimated that a LMP2 car wouldn't be much slower than their LMP1 while being a lot less expensive.
And it also has to be remembered that Porsche and Toyota did a ton of work to negate the rule changes that the ACO employed to slow the factory LMP1 cars. If such changes were made to their cars last year with the 2016 spec front and rear diffusers, they could've rivaled 2015 lap times at Le Mans.
