I take your point. When the race is notably boring, edited highlights can be an improvement. I just find the advert breaks annoying (even on a recording) and I don't like having to keep referring to the lap counter to see how much they have chopped, and then hovering to see if any gaps have changed significantly.
I do think the C4 highlights are better than the old BBC ones were. It always seemed to me the editor was trying to create the most seamless invisible cuts he could. And I wanted the commentator to say "We've now jumped forward 10 laps and the gap from Mansell to Prost has grown to 10 seconds" or whatever.
