Henry Surtees and Keir Millar to be honoured at Downforce Radio Awards

Two of Britain’s finest racing talents whose careers were cut tragically short are to be immortalised by the Downforce Radio Awards as the two young racing driver prizes are to be renamed in their honour. The teenage racing award will now be renamed the Downforce Radio Henry Surtees Teen Racer of the Year, and the Under 13 award will be renamed the Downforce Radio Keir Millar U13 Racer of the Year.

Stock car champion Keir Millar was involved in an accident at Lochgelly Raceway in May of this year tragically succumbing to his injuries in hospital, whilst Henry Surtees died in a Formula 2 crash at Brands Hatch in 2009. Both drivers were both champions in junior race series and destined for glory in their respective motorsport disciplines.

“We feel it is fitting that these two phenomenally talented athletes are commemorated each year in this fashion,” said Downforce Radio editor Jake Sanson today. “We are delighted that both the Surtees and Millar families are behind us in honouring the rising motorsport talents of the future in this way, and we will endeavour to do justice to their memories by awarding two incredible young racers our highest honour every year.”

The prize winners in each category will be selected following a public vote, with the highest five names from the public vote in each category given the chance to win the award. The final five names in each category will then be put to a panel of judges including 1964 Formula One world champion John Surtees and Eurosport commentator Jake Sanson, with the winner in each category getting the chance to meet Mr Surtees and receiving free media coverage from Downforce Radio during the 2016 season.

Karting star Alex Quinn scooped the teen prize last year following a strong campaign in the British Super One karting championship and has now also won major titles in Europe, whilst the U13 prize went to JASCAR runner-up Olly Turner who has set his sights on progressing from short ovals to the BRSCC Fiesta Junior Championship at the end of the 2016 motorsport season.

The Downforce Awards will be broadcasted live on air on December 13th with multiple categories for the public to choose a winner from, via the website www.downforce-radio.co.uk/awards
