Is it likely to cross the channel? When ours was stolen Ireland was a more likely destination - although in reality I suspect it was broken and sold in bits. It's pretty easy to change the identity of an Escort shell so it could pop up in one piece with a new identity. Our replacement car has a number of identifying stamps in hard to access places that will identify the shell as ours - getting rid of all of those will be impossible without some serious cutting even if you knew where they all were.
As you say contacts can be key in these situations - we got all of our wheels and tyres back after they were stolen as they were offered to someone we know and they knew they were ours. Hope you get the car back as it's a lovely bit of kit.
