Possibly a large amount of that is reduction of coal fires . But vehicles have cleaned up by huge amounts so that in most cases the air going into the engine is actually not as clean as the air coming out of the exhaust .

Errrrr - surely that proves the point of the pollution reducing measures to date? So why can't we push on further and try to do better rather than sit back and say "look how good we are"?
Just because air quality is 75% better doesn't mean it's "good" these days - it just demonstrates how even more **** it was 50 years ago.
I avoid going to big cities as much as possible, I find them unbearably cluttered, smelly and horrible. Get rid of the infernal combustion engine from cities ASAP!
