I know that completing the game (and buying and winning new cars along the way) is part of the fun of the GT series, but I think there's a lot you can usually do to continue it's appeal - trying to win certain series' in progressivley slower and slower cars, for example.
Having said that, I didn't actually get GT4 Prologue because:
1) I didn't think it would be long enough;
2) I thought it was worth waiting for GT4, which was meant to be out only a few months after!
