If one takes a purely logical "Mr. Spock" type position, horrible as it might be, a virus based cull would be likely, in the main, to ease (but probably not solve) the looming problems of funding pensions and healthcare for high dependence members of the public masses.

Avoiding a pandemic might defer the challenge for a decade or two. Or a miraculous solution could appear - something like making the retirement age 80 AND supporting that approach with some wonderful elixir that gives everyone up to that age the fitness an capability of a 40years old individual and so capable still of undertaking useful work activities (absent the undesirable options for extended breeding periods which would defeat the purpose of the change.)

Either way the politicians can only react to, not direct, events no matter what self important opinions some of them may have about themselves.

2020 could go down in history as a very "interesting" and "formative" year. Not necessarily in a good way though it might work positively for some philosophies.
