I've seen that mentioned a few times before, but never with any proof that it actually happened.

It seems unlikely because the NGTC build requirements state:

'Once you have chosen your base car you will need to locate the position for the front and rear ‘subframes’. This is determined by the layout of your chosen base vehicle, as the wheelbase of the race car must remain within the +/-10mm tolerance of the homologated road car figure.'

Which means that:
A) the original CC build must have been close to +10mm to make any change effective (possible).
B) team hard were willing to fund a new design and fabrication for the central ROP cage (improbable).
