I think the OP is referring to the tourist days at the ring, There are not that many actual trackdays, I expect the motorsport / trackday insurers would be able to cover the cars on the actual trackdays.
The big issue with tourist days is that all of your third party liability you'd have on the road is applicable, unlike trackdays there are no disclaimers.
The cost of replacing a car isn't what concerns them it's the third party medical cover. £50k worth of car is insignificant compared to the several million they'd end up paying out if your actions were deemed to be responsible for the death or serious injury of another road user.
It still amazes me that the UK insurance industry can decide that the ring isn't a public road when the government in charge of it say that it is.
I'm heading out there in June and expect I'll end up hiring a car to make sure I'm covered.
