Peugeot group cars are probably better built than General Motors group cars for the most part. The list of common failure points on the General Motors 1.4L turbo Astra/Cruze engine is unreal: from the turbocharger housing cracking, to the turbo oil feed getting blocked, to the PCV leaking, to the water pump leaking... it goes on and on.

Personally I would rank both French economy car manufacturers (Peugeot-Citroen and Renault) above the German economy car manufacturers (Opel, Ford-Werke, Volkswagen) for reliability. Both the Opel compact cars and Ford Germany cars (the Ecoboosts that are shared with US models too) seem to have a lot of problems.
