Very sad news and a big gap to fill in the world of Motor Racing.
Formula 1’s race director Charlie Whiting has died on the eve of the start of the Australian Grand Prix.
The 66-year-old, who was a huge figure within the FIA, was found dead in his hotel room after suffering a pulmonary embolism on Thursday morning, motorsport’s governing body confirmed.
Whiting was an ever-present in parc ferme before a race, inspecting cars and enforcing the rules during a race.
His responsibilities also included starting the races and deciding when to stop, pause or restart them. He was at the track with the likes of Sebastian Vettel just a day before he died.
FIA president Jean Todt said in a statement: “It is with immense sadness that I learned of Charlie’s sudden passing.
