I've read many quotes from rally drivers in the past expressing anger and anxiety both about the way the spectators disregard their own safety and the safety of the drivers in their attempts to get close to the cars -- in Portugual I understand they used to try to TOUCH the cars as they went by! Besides being dangerous this seems to me to be a huge distraction to the drivers who have to watch out for unpredictable people leaping in their way as well as dangerous driving conditions.
