BMW pulled out of the BTCC at the end of 1996 to concentrate on their sportscar programmes which ran in 1997 / 1998 / 1999 @ Lemans.
In 1996 BMW produced a very good car that won many races, but then so did Renault which was FWD.
I do agree that the drivetrain / weight rules are a pain, but unless all cars are made rear drive, there isn't much you can do...
