The plate is a fairly obvious reproduction as it has an absolute howler of a mistake on it but a lot of cars lost their chassis plates on the way into the US so that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the car.

In the absence of a history before 1970-ish, the key is whether that AM number is genuine. It's in the right range to be an early BT21 but if that is a modern addition too, then the car could be anything. Do you have a photograph of the AM stamping?
