You need to put your train ticket into the yellow machine at the station at the start of your journey. The machine prints something on your ticket to validate it. Alternatives to Nice are Menton (12 minutes on the train from Monaco) or the lovely town of Villefranche-sur-Mer which is about 2 stops on the train from Nice.
