My favorite Mario story is in Adrian Newey's book. The Newman Haas team was doing preseason testing (at Laguna Seca ) when the rear wing broke and Mario piled the car into the wall. When the team reached the accident site Mario was standing in the rubble (engine and gearbox separated from tub) and the first thing he said was "Goddamned watch has stopped".
He was really tough to beat in '84 and early in 1985 - and continued to win in CART throughout most of the 80s. It's a shame that he never got the overall win at LeMans. Great to see him in such good shape at his age.
