I suppose you could trace the lineage to about 30 years earlier then that, considering Australian Motor Industries were the ones who built the Toyotas for their first twenty years or so (and then got bought out and merged into Toyota Australia) and AMI started back in the twenties when they got the agency for Standard cars.

For a fun fact, AMI at one point simultatenously assembled Standards, Triumphs, Ramblers (so AMCs) and Toyotas. At other times they also built Mercedes-Benzes and Ferguson tractors, and had a deal to built Fiats which fell through.
