Veyron, Pierre
This French driver was born in 1903 and started racing in 1930 with an EHP in which he finished 2nd in the 1,500cc class in the Touring Grand Prix of Oran. In 1931 he acquired a Type 37A Bugatti and, besides winning the 1,500cc class of the Geneva GP, finished 2nd in the Grands Prix of Tunis and Comminges.
For the next four years Veyron confined his activities mainly to the 1,500cc or voiturette class, and in 1932 changed his Bugatti for an 8-cylinder Maserati with which he won the Grands Prix of Casablanca, Lorraine and Comminges, and finished 2nd at Tunis, Oran and Nice, and at Brno in the Czechoslovak GP. In 1933 he drove one of the latest Type 51 A Bugattis, and with this car won the voiturette races at the AVUS, the Grands Prix of Lwow, Poland, and of Albi; finished 2nd in the Grand Prix de La Baule; and 3rd in the Grands Prix of the Eifel and Dieppe. He was invited to join the Bugatti team in 1934,as a driver for voiturette races, and won at the AVUS and Albi, taking 2nd place in the Prix de Berne. He also drove a Type 51 Bugatti in the Grands Prix of Albi (unlimited class race) in which he came 3rd.
In 1935 Veyron had another successful season, winning the Grands Prix of Lorraine and Albi for the third year in succession, and the Grand Prix des Frontieres (2nd in general classification). He was 2nd in the Czechoslovak GP and 3rd at Dieppe. For the most part the races in France in 1936 were confined to sports cars and Veyron became a full member of the Bugatti team for these races. He finished 6th in the French GP, a 1,000 kilometre event at Montlhery, partnered by W. Williams, and 4th in the Grand Prix de la Marne. He was 2nd at Albi, a race by then confined to voiturettes.
Between 1937, and his retirement from racing in 1953, Veyron competed only at Le Mans, where he finished 1st in 1939 with Wimille as co-driver. The pair scored an outstanding victory at record speed, but in all the other years he failed to finish. He died in 1970.
