EfiOz should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I don't think I've used a serial port for a decade.

That said, using a serial port removes the extra bits required by the FTDI circuitry that would make it on board USB. Cost, maybe? It's really not a complexity issue as it's only one more small IC.
