Costs of GT Racing
Does anyone know roughly per season what the costs are of competing in series like Blancpain, British GT, GT4, ELMS, WEC etc?
Just interested to see how much money you would need to be competitive in series like those? |

Well, the best figure I have is from four years ago... back then, if you wanted to have a shot at the title in ADAC GT-Masters (8 race weekends with 2 one hour races each), you'd need to come up with roughly half a million € per car.
It has probably gone up since... |

450,000 a year per driver is a solid estimate.

Be interesting to see what a pay driver would have to bring for a ride in BES. Would have to be a bit higher then half a million especially with Spa 24hr.

A couple of years ago one of the pro drivers in British GT suggested on here a figure around £250,000. I'll see if I can find it.....

2 years ago a friend of mine drove in British GT4 in a Ginetta G50 and I think it was £60k per year back then, probably as cheap as it could be done, and I don't think that included testing or damage.
2 or 3 years prior to that I helped out a team in British GT4 running a lotus 2-11 and ISTR the figure of £7k per weekend being mentioned, and we were considered paupers! |

Doctor Evil underestimated the value, in this context that is overestimating
Some time ago I asked here what the price tag would have been 10-15 years ago with GT1 and GT2 and how that corresponded to the present times and classes, but I forgot what people replied. Of course, even with higher sums the economy was different, as were the serie requirements itself... |

A budget for British Gt GT4 in a Ginetta is around £120k as a starting point and in an Aston about £180k
GT3 I would expect most to be spending upwards of £350k for most cars |

A single GT3 budget matches that of a single LMP2 budget, it ain't cheap!

Discussions with an ELMS team considering a move/expansion into GT Asia. The logistics are going to all cost the same (in a comparable series) and the wear and tear on the cars really isn't any different, you're going to get similar km's out of most components and those components are just as expensive to replace.

So apart from the independently wealthy, how do other drivers fund their GT race season? Do they expense it through the company books under advertising or client entertainment? I bet the tax man loves that! Or do they somehow get sponsorship - so who wants to sponsor some random middle aged bloke who likes to go racing?! I'd hazard a guess the guys in MX5s are quicker drivers than some of those racing GTs on telly. That's the trouble with motorsport - ability to find comes ahead of ability to drive, seemingly right up to and including F1. Is this a fair comment?
