Practice report and times.

The weather forecast seems to be for showers, so it could be hit and miss.

Qualifying was held on a damp but drying track and the top 19 drivers set their best time on their last lap.

Almost inevitably Jean-Eric Vergne dominated and took pole for Races 1 (this afternoon) and 3.

Report here. Times:

Good to see 24 cars out there, even if they aren't all on the pace.

Buller must have been penalised, because the report says he was 2nd fastest.

Buller was penalised. Silly mistake by the team as that rule has been around forever.

Calado won race 1 from Vergne in changeable conditions. More later. Webb was 9th, so lost a lot of ground.

So, what does Vergne need to do tomorrow to clinch the title - or, is this no longer possible?

He needs to be 108 points ahead of Calado (or Webb) at the end of the day. At the moment he's slipped back to 101, but it is still possible.

Race 1 report. The results are there too, but I'll add them here for convenience.

He has indeed. Yesterday didn't see the most exciting racing, but Silverstone never does unless the weather comes into play as it did on Saturday. Amazingly it was bright and sunny yesterday.

It was good that Adriano Buzaid broke the pattern and took a win in this this race. That's the idea behind the semi-reversed grid and they threw in the 'pt-stops' as an additional feature. They all went smoothly and personally I would like to have seen them in the feature race instead.

As it was, the feature race was all about Jean-Eric Vergne. Having secured pole on Saturday, he led from start to finish and set a new lap record on the way. It was about as convincing a way of securing the title as you could wish for. The gap to Buzaid would have been greater, but Vergne's engine cover was slightly loose. Adriano picked up the Sunoco Driver of the Day Award for his best weekend of the season.

Report and results:

In the battle for second place and the honour of being the leading British driver James Calado now has 230 points and Oli Webb 213.

There are just two more meetings, Snetterton at the end of the month and Brands Hatch on September 25/26, but that's still six races.

gt_torque should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
JEV is a great guy and a worthy champ. Seeing Webb, Mckenzie, Calado and Svendsen-Cook develop this year has been brilliant and they've all improved at varying levels.

It was really nice to see Buzz on the top step again too. Following his move from T-Sport there was quite a bit of pressure on the lad, but he kept his head together and I think you'll see him pick up a couple more wins before the year is out.

Both races yesterday were fairly dull. In fact, all the racing I saw yesterday was quite boring - I even fell asleep for a good ten minutes during the British GT race!

I called Vergne to be this year's British F3 before the first round at Oulton Park. Not the most difficult prediction, as the Carlin-Red Bull combination seems to produce the top drivers.

He's had a stellar season, but I'm undecided if the rest of the field were much cop this year. Last year when Ricciardo clinched the title, there wasn't really anyone who could stop him. This year there was, er, Calado and Webb, perhaps?

To me it's it's not hugely interesting, because there's no comparison in terms of the number of races per season, but I wonder if Jean-Eric will score the most wins in any one season before this one's over. Jan Magnussen holds the record from way back in 1994 at 14, I think. I shall have to check.

I enjoyed the Sprint race, the pit stops added some drama, and there was a lot of battling where I was (Club). However I do agree that the pit stops should be part of the 40 minute race.

Vergne is a well deserved champion, very consistant throughout but it has been easy for him. Always was going to be with Carlin Red Bull combination, all others, irrespective of talent were always competing for second before the season started. Like you, I use the GT racing to catch up on sleep. Yes the F3 feature race was boring but the first race on Saturday was fantastic. Seeing Calado destroy Vergne was amazing in such bad conditions, best race of the year and well awaited first real showdown between them with equal cars due to conditions. Great to see Buzaid on top again, far better than Webb when he is on it, lets hope he can do more of the same and maybe challenge Webb and Calado for second.Shame Nasr isnt quite ready, hope he does F3 again, one to watch.

Having been to watch at the weekend Sunday was quite boring racing, although the pit stop race was quite exciting as it unfolded.

Saturday was better, although the weather played a hand in that.

Good to see another face in National Class, and a new winner at that. A brave decision for him to stay out on slicks in the wet that paid off for him to win.

I for one enjoyed all the racing at the weekend. Shame that more of the cspectators didn't watch the support races where there were some excellent battles such as in the MX5's and especially the Formula Fords. No doubt we will be seeing one or two of the FF guys in F3 next season. Would be good to see Malvern and Pye moving up. Both have impressed me a lot this year.

He certainly does, 14 of 18. As you said back in 94 with PSR.

Thanks for saving me doing the research! If that's right, 14 wins from 18 is such a high percentage that it doesn't really matter how many more races JEV wins, he won't be able to match that.

I remember Dario, Vincent Radermaker and Riccardo Rossett, at Snett, were two of the other race winners that season.

Jan had a 77.77% win rate that season, i doubt if that will ever be matched, if anyone does he'll be good!

Poor Dario in the same team was slaughtered, but I think you could say he's come out of it pretty well since.

It was the first year BF3 ran double races. The grid for the first race was set by qualifying as usual, but the grid for the second race was based on the results of the first race. A bad idea, because it meant that if you came out of the first race badly you were stuffed for the second race as well. It was changed very quickly for the next season.

i suppose it's a fair question - if you were red bull would you let vergne finish the season or perhaps draft in another driver to get some f3 experience since he's doing formula renault 3.5..?

It might suit Carlin if they did. Then Calado and Webb could battle it out for the runner-up spot. But with Red Bull you never know what they're going to do until it happens.

Was Gareth Rees the other winner in 94? He was usuallyh on the podium in his ADR car.

Interestingly a current F1 team principal was driving for Fortec that season.

I'm not sure if Gareth won in BF3, but he did win the Marlboro Masters for ADR, which was a real shot in the arm.

Would the team principal be Christian Horner? There's a British F3 page on Facebook and a while ago someone posted a photo from that year and after a while just about everyone in it was named, including Christian. They were all huddled around watching a telly and Christian was sitting down and viewed from behind looked like a 12-year-old schoolboy!

The racing career of Gareth Rees

1994 Formula 3 Britain
Position: 3 (171 points)
18 races. 0 wins. 0 pole positions. 8 podiums. 1 fastest lap.

Team: Alan Docking Racing
Car: Dallara 394 (Mugen Honda)

Race winners in 1994: Magnussen 14, Radermecker 2, Dario & Rosset 1. It also quite funny to see how many F1 people are in the bottom of the points table
