F1 car to lap Mount Panorama
"
F1 car to lap Mount Panorama 14 Feb, 2011 04:00 AM A PUBLICITY stunt which would generate world-wide publicity for the city appears certain to get the green light. When Bathurst Regional Council gathers for its ordinary monthly meeting on Wednesday one item on the agenda is bound to receive plenty of attention behind closed doors. A confidential report will look at the possibility of Formula One champion Jenson Button bringing one of his team’s cars to Mount Panorama to swap driving duties with V8 Supercar ace Craig Lowndes sometime next month. The concept was first tried in March last year when Button and Holden driver Jamie Whincup swapped cars to do four hot laps around the Albert Park circuit as part of the build up to the Australian F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne. A similar promotion is now being talked about with the iconic Mount Panorama the lure. Mayor Paul Toole has confirmed council has been approached by V8 Team Vodafone and F1 Vodafone McLaren regarding the initiative......" They'll have to replace the plank with a proper, titanium skid plate. The spark show alone should be darn spectacular.
And, funny thing, not even the Monza gearing will be long enough for Conrad. It could be the fastest an F1 car goes all year. |

Conrod from the exit of Forrest's Elbow to the braking point of the Chase is .95mi. The run from La Source to Les Combes is 1.21 miles. |

Be pretty spectacular in any case but they'd have to button well back going over the top of the mountain I would imagine. |

Re La Source to Les Combes. Well it may be longer than Conrod, but Conrod is downhill all the way, whereas the majority of the Spa section you mention, from the exit of La Source through Radillon to Les Combes is up hill all the way, and in parts quite steep. Think speeds are higher at Spa going from Stavelot to the Bus Stop. At Monza, the cars with their low downforce setup hit 350kph pretty much (it used to be higher in the days of pre rev limits with the V10s.) Gearing is less of a problem than the aero that might be needed at Bathurst over say Monza speeds. But, as has been said , it is planned as a promotion, not a world record speed attempt. With Lowndes at the wheel driving an F1 for the first time ever, I am sure that they will be running a fair amount of downforce and top speed on Conrod will not be a priority. Edit: Seen that most of what I said has been covered by Stooge and Tourer between my reading Matts comments and me writing my post. |

It could be entertaining watching both Button and Lowndes trying to negotiate the crown on Mountain and Conrod Straights....even at a diminished speed.

I reckon it'll be difficult getting the aero balance right.
Not enough downforce and they'll be doing a MW halfway down Conrod. Too much and it'll bottom out all over the place. And the dipper Would be pretty cool to see though |

It might be a PR thing but stuff like this comes along once in a blue moon so Im going to enjoy this. On a similar note my memory is hazy but did the Team Oz Champcar ever run at Bathurst? Did it not have mechanical problems that stopped it from turning a quick one? |

From comments on Western Advocate;
http://www.westernadvocate.com.au/ne...a/2074517.aspx "The reason the dipper is a problem is because of how low these F1 cars are. It cannot be treated as just another corner. The F1 cars will bottom out going through there at any serious pace...." --------------------------- Mate its not that hard, with today's technology they can easly set up a switch to "raise" the car to go through the Dipper and "lower" it again when they come out of it. Hell, if you can select the front and rear drive percentage on a road going Subaru (and others) I'm sure it would not be a difficult task on an F1. Actually I wouldn't be suprised if they already have such a setup on their test cars to test for different suspension setups. I can see your point re Vodafone promotion, still it won't hurt to throw out the challenge to the other teams, if not this year there's always next year |

I believe BMW ran a Monaco type setup with the car at its highest suspension settings at the Nordschleife when they ran their F1 car there so maybe McLaren might do the same.
So will both Lowndes and Button drive the car? I would find that quite interesting, you have one driver that knows the track really well but not the car and for the other driver its the complete opposite. |

Why the hell would they design an active suspension for an out of date car that is going to use it for a couple of laps of Bathurst for a publicity stunt and never again?

I agree with you on the one-off publicity stunt but my original answer to the poster on Western Advocate was in the context of a full blown F1 race at the mount if it ever took place. Yeah, yeah, I know it'll never happen, just dreaming....but what a dream!!! |

A modern F1 car will happily drive along the roof of the tunnel at Monaco at 100mph. As long as it could get up there of course. Staying on the road won't be a problem. I'm guessing they'll carry a lot of downforce for the mountain and then sacrifice straight line speed.

Last night Bathurst Regional Council approved the Vodafone promotion at Mount Panorama when Jenson Button and Craig Lowndes will swap their Formula 1 McLaren and Holden V8 Supercar to do laps of the circuit.
It will take place on Tuesday March 22 - more info as it comes to hand |

Some of the earlier comments regarding worldwide publicity are WELL OFF THE MARK if you are referring to mass media exposure.
These types of demonstrations are done globally all the time and at best will be picked up by enthusiasts tuning into their daily dose of motorsport via specialist motorsport web sites. Tell me the last time prime time news showed an F1 demonstration in a foreign country? Aussie Taxpayers are continually paying for politicians and councillors signing off our funds for a photo opportunity. Now we have Bathurst Residents paying for the privilege to promote the Vodafone brand...and people wonder why their rates keep going up when their suburb basically does not progress in any meaningful way. F1's have been doing lots of testing lately...none of it makes the 30mins of news. Glad I don't have to pay for Vodafone to promote their brand in my back yard. |

I hope you are wrong, from what I've read else where, Vodafone put in an application to use the track and last night Bathurst council granted them permission. There is no mention of Bathurst Council paying Vodafone, though granted the Council will bear some cost in closing the track and making it available. We will know at the next Council meeting (early March) if money changed hands. "....Vodafone, which sponsors Lowndes' Triple Eight Racing and Button's McLaren F1 team, has lodged an application with Bathurst Council seeking permission for the one-off event. The planned swap would be in the lead-up to the Melbourne Grand Prix, to be held on March 24-27." http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/dr...-1226000518993 |
