How much !!

We all know that motorsport is expensive to participate in, but have you ever worked out how much it costs you as a spectator, marshal or other unpaid official.

As a result of a conversation with a work colleague at the start of the year, I decided to keep a record of my costs this year and a total of 52 days as a spectator adds up as follows….

Total mileage : 8326 at approximately 33 MPG and an average of £4 per gallon (90p/litre) for petrol = £1010
Tickets : £ 472.50
Hotels : £289 (mainly reduced rate Travelodges)
Flights, airport parking & car hire for BTCC at Mondello : £115
Programmes : £108.50
Dartford crossing tolls : £33
South Bank parking at Brands : £30

Total cost : £2058 – and this is without including food & drink !

Anybody else been sad enough to keep this sort of record – if so let’s see your expenses.

I have kept a running expenses log for the past 4 years, not a good way of seeing how much you like a sport...

If you kept an acccurate records of what it cost to attend motorsport events on a weekly basis you would probably stop going.

I know when I was marshalling I was spending several thousand pounds a year, over 10 years or so I could of bought a house!

Have you not got home yet? Are still at the circuit?

Maybe they just liked going to Brands! It soon adds up.

OK, from a marshalling perspective:
Days marshalled : 50
Mileage per day : 100
Total mileage : 5000
Mileage cost @ 30 mpg & £4/gal: £666.66
Dartford tolls : £64

Tickets : £0
Programs : £0

Total for the year : £730.66

Total motor costs shouldn't just include fuel.. lots of extras to take account of. Visit the AA website to calcualte the true costs (will add a few hundred quid).

Coming home from Thruxton, I went round the top - it's about the same distance to the A12 junction.

(Cue rant about traffic jams around Heathrow not mentioned on radio reports or matrix signs)

I stopped doing the sums very long time ago. Did them for a while while still racing and marshalling. Frightening!

Even only marshalling gave an amazing amount of money that I had spent. I could have been rich not doing this c**p.
This year alone 16 trips to the UK, just for nothing.

But what would I do without the sport?
And the many friends?
