VSCC Spring Start (incl FISCAR's George Abecassis Centenary Trophy Race) 20/21 April
Those of you who purchase or read Autosport may have noted a small piece on page 85 of last Thursday's issue. The VSCC are expanding their popular Spring Start meeting at Silverstone to 2 days. The meeting will include a special one off sports car race to celebrate the centenary birth of the well- known British racing driver, the late George Abecassis, who was also co-founder of HWM. The race which has been put together by the combined efforts of George’s son, David, FISCAR and the VSCC is by personal invitation only and features classes for cars actually driven by George and those of a similar type, thus:
Class 1 – Alta and Alta engine HWM Sports cars Class 2 – HWM Jaguar sports cars Class 3 – Aston Martin DB2/3/3S Class 4 – Austin Healey 100s (100/4, 100M & 100s) Class 5 - Healey Silverstone It is particularly appropriate that amongst the entry list is George’s grandson/David’s son, Jonathan, in his Healey 100/4. This will be a rare mix of rare cars and we are hoping that it will provide a spectacular grid for this race which will take place on Saturday, 20th April. Alongside all the usual VSCC paddock displays we also hope to have a small selection of those ex Abecassis cars and HWMs that will be unable to race, and that this will also be a celebration of the HWM marque, too. This meeting should be one of the highlights of the coming historic racing season in the UK and the VSCC have organised this 2 day meeting to include:- The GP Itala and Lanchester Trophies Race for Vintage Racing Cars The Amschel Rothschild & Patrick Lindsay Memorial Trophies Race for front-engined Pre-1961 Racing Cars T The Fox & Nicholl Trophy Race for Standard & Modified Pre-war Sports-Cars The Silverstone Trophy Race for Special Pre-war Sports-Cars The VSCC Regularity Trial (30 minutes) Short Scratch and Short Handicap Races for Pre-war Cars HGPCA Pre-1966 Grand Prix Cars 1950s Sports Racing Cars HRDC pre-’65 historic GT and Touring cars The 500OA Commander Yorke Trophy Race Pre-war Aston Martin Race FJHRC Front-engined Formula Junior Race All in all it’s looking like a superb event. |

It does look like it should be a good meeting, although it is perhaps a pity that it clashes with the HSCC meeting at Cadwell.
Without wishing to go off on too much of a tanget, is there any update as to FISCAR's 2013 calendar? The reason for asking is that I'm in the process of planning my season. Many thanks, Ben. |

Well done VSCC - this does look a pretty good line up.
Could be the first opportunity to exercise the Lotus Mk IX in the 50s Sports Racing Cars, and the HRDC race is ideal for the Elite or the WSM. Only downside is that it's on the National circuit which is not my favourite. But the contents of the paddock makes up for this as there is always such interesting stuff there. And surely the snow will have cleared by then.... |

Ben These are the dates given to the team captains. Slight delay in general release is probably because the HSCC has still to finally confirm the details of the Brands race May 5th Brands Hatch Indy - MGCC May 19th Donington Park - Morgan Sports Car Club Jun 15/16 Silverstone GP MG Live! - MGCC Jul 13/14 Brands Hatch GP - HSCC (Provisional) Aug 10th Silverstone Club Circuit - BDC Aug 25/26 Oulton Park Gold Cup - HSCC Oct 6th Castle Combe Autumn Classic So plan away...... |

I am still in States.
Back for Flying Scotsman which stupidly clashes with VSCC opener. We intended to send Alta for Abercassis race and Fox and Nichol but that seems to have fallen out of bed. The Flying Scotsman is now the foremost Pre War rally and if you look at entry VSCC have lost at least fifteen driver entrants.Pity. We will be at Donington with Alta in HGPDA race and three inPre 63 The idea was to cut back being a grouchy nearly 70 year old. |

While I am sure the VSCC are bound by all sorts of dates constraints as to when they can run, Philip Young just does what he wants, where he wants and when he wants. ERA is a business and thus does not need to work with the gneuine clubs.
It's also Drive It Day so most old car enthuisiasts will be doing something. |

Flyng Scotsman and vscc
John Ruston is right that the vscc has lost a number of entries as a result of the clash with the flying Scotsman: this is not in the specials that race whatever, but in the genuine vintage road cars which many would race if given the appropriate opportunity. The flying Scotsman provides four days of competition for crews with regularities and tests against genuine road cars with evening meals together: truly the spirit of the vscc and hardly surprising that the entry is over 100cars. Whilst Philip Young may be an acquired taste and a commercial operator, the fact that There are 100 entries to such a rally should make people think more deeply about both what people want, and also how many don't want to get involved in organisations but just want to partipate in activities......

Threads now merged. Notwithstanding the loss of some entries to the Flying Scotsman, this is still going to be a great event with plenty of fabulous cars. The FISCAR sponsored George Abecassis Centenary Trophy Race has at last count 27 great cars entered. Come and see it; it'll only happen the once as a centenary race with this class structure. Loads of great VSCC races all weekend, of course.

Phil Young markets his events very well and aims at the upper end of the market. I wonder how many VSCC members can afford to do his events? if you look at similar type events run over one day, but including all the crews' food, plus tests ands regularities, run by genuine clubs, most will chage less than £100 for the event.

The F S is cheap compared to similar international events and is superior to the majority of them. This continual whinging about costs is nonsense as the event was oversubscribed within a month of entries opening and yes P Y is not everyone's cup of tea it is obvious that the thing works. Pity is that it clashes with VSCC. |

The FS is cheap! Not from where I am standing. Compare it to a typical HRCR or NESCRO event and it's outrageous if you take entry fee, accomodation, food and fuel into it. Only the seriously rich can afford to do it. If you take one of the VSCC's own trials events the entry fees are about £50 for the day's fun.

I said the F S was cheap compared with other International Events.
Check cost of Tour Auto that starts following Tuesday. Many of the top European Regularity have entered and yes it does use decent hotels, have good food and is extremely well run. I suppose the test is that at least a dozen drivers who had the choice of the two events chose the F S rather than Silverstone. Different strokes for different folks! Does it matter and let us waste our money as we feel fit. Cheapest way is to do no events and have a virtual competition experience on here! |

You pay's yer money, and you take's yer choice!
Personally, I can't afford any of the events mentioned, so who gives a ....................! What ever you decide I hope you enjoy it. I shall have to make do with Silverstone, and pay tribute to one of the drivers who I so well remember, and whose picture hangs above my desk as I write. RIP George. Cheers, bauble. OAP. |

I shall be running in the London Marathon that weekend so will be at neither event but JR is right - as a paying punter you have the freedom of choice!

The clash is a nuisance as I have George's 2 Seater Sports Car and originally promised David Abercassis and John Turner that it would be in the race but unfortunately events conspired against us and the FS clash has not helped.
The car won the Sports Car Race and Sprint after the war. Perhaps next year if they have one. |

Does anyone have a timetable for the Spring Start? The VSCC website has the races, but no proper timetable.
