Article on Marcos Ambrose from ESPN

While it's not about a current V8 Supercar driver, it gives a good idea of the exposure he's now getting:

At least the thread title doesn't give away anything that occured in a Busch race........ unlike another thread started earlier in the week......... before I had managed to watch it.........

May educate a few to follow the sport more widely - given that V8 performances are NOT highly regarded internationally.

It's funny that Marcos is being called "mr nice guy" and "all class" in America....especially after what Holden fan's branded him.

Well, while we're on the subject of Mr. Ambrose's antics in V8SC, anyone care to give us somewhat unfamiliar with V8's stories a quick rundown of him more infamous moves and incidents?

One of the more famous incidents from Bathurst 2005. I think that will never be forgotten because of the Ambrose / Murphy argument that followed. Sorry can’t find the footage but if you can find it it’s worth the watch

Ambrose won the championship in 2003 & 2004, look in history on this site

Marcos made a big mistake, by winning two championships and shaking the Status Quo that is Holden (Chev for out Nth American friends) who had won the previous 5 championships. so suddenly he alienated 50% of the fan.

at the start of 2005 Marcos announced he was heading to NASCAR in 2006. Suddenly alot of Ford fans started attacking him as he seemed a little two big for his boots and Australians dont like that.

So little things became big issues and showed marcos was not a nice person (in their opinion) he did get into trouble for bringing the sport into disrepute by stating that V8SA (the controlling body) were out to get him, because they penalised him twice for a minor race incident (this was something that had never happened before, and has never happened since).

edit and i forgot, he failed to wheer a balaclava (blalaclavagate) and that annoyed people. that incident above was the pass for 2nd late in the race and both those drivers had the pace of the leader, but it wasnt to be

He did nothing really bad, exept he took it up to the holden drivers and while they didnt mind the first year, it started to grate on them in the 2nd (and if not for that incident in the video above almost the 3rd)

Man, I really wish we could have as much of a passion for manufacturer rivalries here in the U.S. as you guys have down there. While I know of diehard GM, Ford, and Dodge fans, it's not to the point where we have masses of people just getting p'd off for the other manufacturer winning. Meanwhile, the Holden vs. Ford rivalry you guys have has no signs of losing steam. Such fan support!

its has its good points and bad points, but its rare to end up in violence.

i should ahve addd a disclaimer that my son has the middle name Ambrose. so it may be easy to see which side of the fencei lie in.

the passion goes back about 40 years, so it is well entrenched, but the downside is it makes it difficult for the series to get a third manufacturer and also for the Ford and Holden to withdraw support

I think the thing that also annoyed many about Marcos is the fact that he was a racer.

During Marcos reign in Australia, the point system was such that it rewarded consistency over race wins. Therefore, you had 80% of the field just choofing around, picking up points.

Not Marcos. He was a racer. If there was a chance to pass & gain a position, he took it, where's a lot of his opposition would just gladly sit back & not risk the points. This also upset some of the drivers (remember Skaife & Hidden Valley) & subsequently some of the fans.
