I used to drive to Snetterton and quite often would be overtaken by the Albert Betts Jaguar on his way to the circuit.
He was perhaps the most regular racer at Snett. in those days. The John? Day i am refeering to may have driven an old Lotus 51 with an air intake that was confused with the driver having his hand in the air, from my flag marshals point of view. Although it was out of date it was very quick. |

John Day was very succesful at Snett in his 51. There is a great shot of his Lotus in the Tipler book 'Lotus Racing cars 1968-2000.
Forum member Ted Walker of 'Ferret Fotographics' owns the copyright. Perhaps he will let us scan it and post it here? Ted? |

In the meantime, I was looking through some old progs - remember these Snetterton regulars? Teddy Savoury - Mustang & Capri V8 John Jordan - GT40 Terry Croker - ex Broadspeed Anglia Len Dixon - Anglia Anorack time! One of the programmes was for the 1966 Good Friday 'Archie Scott-Brown' memorial Trophy race, for Sports-Racing cars over 2-litres. Quite an entry. Hard to imagine Snett hosting a top line International like this now: Bruce McLaren - McLaren Elva-Oldsmobile 4939cc Chris Amon - McLaren Elva-Oldsmobile 4939cc John Coundley - McLaren Elva-Oldsmobile 4450cc Frank Gardner - McLaren Elva-Ford 4727cc Keith St.John - McLaren Elva-Ford 4727cc Dave Prophet - McLaren Elva-Chev 5600cc Graham Hill - Team Surtees Lola T70 Chev 5967cc Denny Hulme - Sid Taylor Lola T70 Chev 5967cc Brian Redman - Red Rose Lola T70 Chev 5967cc Hugh Dibley - Lola T70 Chev 5967cc John Dean - Lotus 30 Ford 4727cc J.Berry - Lotus 30 Ford 4727cc Peter Sadler - Lotus 30 Ford 4727cc John Nicholson - Lotus 30 Ford 4727cc Dickie Attwood - GT40 Ford 4727cc Eric Liddell - GT40 Ford 4727cc Richard Bond - GT40 Ford 4727cc Peter Sutcliffe - GT40 Ford 4727cc David Piper - Ferrari 365P2 4380cc V.Wilson - Ferrari 250LM 3286cc G.Kinnane - Crossle Ford 4727cc J.Sutton - Attila 9 Chev 5359cc Hulme won and set a new outright lap record of 1.33.8 at 104mph. The final outright lap record for the old 2.71 mile Snetterton ( using the Norwich Straight & Hairpin) was set by Brett Lunger in an F5000 Trojan T101 in 1.18.4 at 124.44mph on 20th April 1973, the last season of the old great circuit. 175mph before braking for the hairpin by the petrol station! |

I certainly remember Teddy Savoury i think he drove one of Vince Woodmans Escorts as well on one occasion. John Jordan was another i know he lived local to me as did Martin Thomas who came to Snett on pot hunts with his british saloon car Camaro and Mustang.
And heres one that will tax the memory a sports car driver called Don Duplas who drove a gt car called a Daisy. He was an American airman i believe. Not very competative but always there. |

Doesn't Martin Thomas now run a pub in Biggleswade town centre?
And yes John 'shunter' Jordan ( Jordan Cereals) have their operation there. Just across the road by the retail park is Mark Blundell's new office and those of his father's Manhattan Corporation. Just up the road in Gamlingay is Dave Finnigan's workshops - full of F1 BRM / F5000 Lola and McLaren M6B. I'm not far away in St.Neots, with Titan and Lola just up the road. |
