Dennis Harris
Dennis Harris passed away last night after a prolonged illness.
Dennis will be known to many marshals through his involvement in the BARC and BTCC. Our thoughts are with Carol and family.l |

What a sad, sad couple of weeks -- Alec, Margaret and now Dennis. I have known and worked with Dennis for many years, until he "retired" last year. Although "old school" and a Director of BARC, he always had marshals interests at heart and wrote a regular column on marshalling issues in the BARC magazine.
He was a major influence in the BTCC pitlane and provided a guiding hand to myself, Dorothy, Ian Denyer, Nick Allison and many other Specialist marshals. Carol, also a BTCC stalwart, had been very ill herself at the beginning of the year, but has improved recently, and my thoughts are with her and family. RIP Dennis. |

He really is a sad loss to our sport, as you say he was very much a representative of marshals at higher levels. |

Very sad news, Dennis was a very knowledgeable, and very approachable chap, who was always happy to chat and pass on his skills. He will be sadly missed - my condolences to all his family at this difficult time.

Dennis reminds me of my early years as a Marshal.......particularly the BTCC, when I'd show up at a "New" track and look completely lost. He also looked after our Lisa as a new Startline Marshal.
Our thoughts are with Carol and Family - Dennis will be missed......and so will the cloth cap! |

Dennis will be sadly missed by motorsport and marshalling. When Dennis would do his pit marshals briefing, we would count how many times he said 'in actual fact' he was approachable, ameniable, if someone upset you he would be after them just a wonderful man! My thoughts are with Carol and the family at this very sad time.

Very sad news, was fortunate to have guidance from Dennis during my first few meetings in the BTCC pitlane, and at several events over the years since then.
RIP Dennis. |

I had the privilege of being taught by Dennis and I have some very fond memories of him. I forget how many times he told me he was retiring from motorsport - well now he has finally done so.
Dennis was one of the finest pit marshals you could wish to meet and learn from and he will be sadly missed. My deepest sympathy to Carroll at this very sad time. RIP Dennis. |

Yet another shock at a loss to the marshalling world. I met Dennis at various meetings over the years and I don't think that I ever saw him without a smile on his face. You'll be missed.
RIP Dennis. |

Though he was the pit boss for BTCC meetings, Dennis would always stroll over to to the Assembly area for an encouraging chat on the event's first morning. He would always, without fail, also appear towards the end of day two to shake hands, thank everyone - including the youngsters - for the paddock team's contribution to the meeting, and have a chin-wag.
Despite baseball hats now being normal headwear, I think Dennis's tweed flat cap, and its various badges, should be remembered as a symbol of respect to gentlemanly marshalling. RIP DH - top chap. |

I am very saddened by this news. Dennis was a true gent, always approachable. I have very fond memories of some of Dennis's "birthday" nights at BTCC away weekends.
Dennis, may you rest in peace. Carol, my thoughts are with you at this time. Steve, sven, gonfra |

I will always remember Dennis for his enthusiasm and warmth.
He always had an encouraging word for his marshals, would make a point of thanking every marshal at the end of the day and you would find him stood out in all weathers along with his marshals, there was no hiding away in an office for Dennis. He stood by his marshals, that was very evident to me when I marshalled a GP with him and having submitted a report of an infringement by an F1 team, he read it and asked me if I wanted it submitting to the FIA, I said yes, and he said he would accompany me to any meeting with the FIA stewards. Marshalling has lost a larger than life figure and hopefully the marshals he trained will carry on his excellent work. Condolences to Carol and family. Last edited by mark_l; 2 Oct 2008 at 16:15. |
