The Winter Theme-What Cars do you want to buy
J.T. suggested that people list the cars they would buy in certain value catagories.Have thought about it and realize it could be quite contentious.
My valuation of the spread of 904 values asked for from our Moscow correspondent was questioned by some Welsh specialist who sounded a lot like a London City Broker in drag ,Can't see man from deepest Wales talking about books ,have my ideas who it really was.The car in question at Goodwood did not have engine and needed a complete rebuild so the basis of the following list is based on Sept 08 values and being in good order and historically correct Under 10K Fiat 500 Under 20K NSU Prinz Under 50K Mini Cooper 1275 Under 100K 1934 Talbot 105 Saloon Under 250K 1968 Chevron B8 Under 500K 1934 Talbot 105 Over 500K 1938 Talbot 150S Hopefully we can now find out how many different Capris there are and which types of B's can be bought in different bands |

Saying "under" a figure is a bit contentious isn't it? How much under 10K would a Fiat 500 be and is 50K a true figure for a Mini Cooper?

I'm sure mini cooper prices vary wildly depending on history, as they do with many race cars, which will make most valuations of an imaginary vehicle a bit contentious! |

So I take it we could be into the "More money than sense" syndrome.

I must confess that I have never equated those who own historic cars, whether for the road or the track as having much sense anyway (and I include myself in that category) because its all about the pain and pleasure of owning them. Such hobbies rarely allow much room in the head for commonsense. It's the speculators who have 'more money than sense'; many of whom got their hands badly burned in the late 80's, early 90's.
I note that John's list includes a Talbot Saloon, which whilst it appeals personally, means that we are not restricting ourselves to racing then? I'd like an ex works Talbot 105, too, although I blanche a little at the value. Any list of mine (racing cars only) would have to include at least one Aston and maybe a BMW 3.0 CSL 'Batmobile'. I'd also want to go for something more 'off the wall' than the B8, say a Ginetta G16 or a G12 even. The Martini Lancia LC2 chassis No 7 much appeals at the current £275k asking price, if visual and ownership pleasures outweigh your desire to be competitive and you are prepared to bear the running costs. I could get quite carried away here, since it is much easier to talk about dreams than reality! |

I class myself in the more money than sense category, unfortunately I have very little money and even less sense so I have to limit myself to my replica Dtype. If I had space I would go for an FIA spec MGB as this would IMHO be the most fun per buck, oh and it would be sub £20K, it can be done despite what's posted elsewhere.

Well if we weren't restricting ourselves to racing I'd start with a 50k Aston Martin V8 Vantage.
If it's racing cars (or cars for racing) I'm in the no sense in being sensible bracket and for sheer fun I'd have a Group 1 Metro turbo £20k, or a Group A Rover Vitesse still around £20k. I've already got a Capri that is valued between £12 and £20k depending who is doing the selling. And being fairly boring I really see no reason to have anything else unless it is an Ex Works car such as RMO 699F (MGC GTS) or one of the few works Cologne Capris but the former will come in around £30k and the latter is around £100k so I doubt I'd ever justify the cost. You never know though. |

Its a dreamers Thread and the values can be considered between rather than under eg under 500 is between 250 and 500.(105 Works car only just scrapes in as last one sold on 500 and now having rebuild!)The costs are not a discussion point as value only matters to buyers and sellers and the rest really are just being nosey .It's a list of whatever floats your boat and can be race, rally or road cars.Cars to use rather than trailer queens.Value seemed to be the only way but it would be interesting if the list is 10 cars you would buy irrespective of price.

Surely that's "the", because they only made one with a DFV, the others had different engines.

Under 20k Alfa Guila Ti Super Under 50k Jaguar XK120 Under 100k Jaguar E Type full race spec Under 250k Lotus 15 Under 500k D Type with weak history or an Alfa TZ I am sure I am probably being optimistic by about 10% in each case..... dreams are however free! |

If we're dreaming then it's got to be a Dtype with any history, a Lister Jag and a Mustang GT350, oh and maybe a Lotus 11 just for fuel economy.
