Kiwi in ASA Late Models
I see Kiwi midget hot shoe Michael Pickens had his first win in a "Nascar" style car on the pavement at Dixie Motor Speedway. After a couple of outings last year, this is his first full season on the pavement.
Pickens has shone on the dirt in his native NZ, in Australia and been placed at the Chili Bowl. I am not familiar with the structure of racing in the US, where does ASA Late Models fit, what are the cars specs? Maybe a fellow aussie can tell me if Owen Kelly is running the same cars? |

There are actually two different versions of the ASA going now-a-days.
Your Kiwi friend here, is in the ASA Late Model Series, a crate series that has the North, South, and Challenge series. Ran by the Varney family they got the name from the previous owners of the ASA. New owners than went to court with the Varney's, yada, yada. The ASA that was provided in the link, is the member track group, and various touring series. The ASCAR series in Europe got the cars from the former National tour that these guys ran. |

I would place the ASA Late Models on par with ARCA. IMO. Both series are dependent on drivers that come in with money in their pocket, especially ARCA.
Kelly Bires, Stephen Leicht both in the NNS are former ASA Late Model champs. |

I's say if you place the Cup series at #1, ASA would be a #5 series, so a far ways off. But not inconceivable that he could make it on up there.

from ASA to the Chili Bowl
Michael Pickens completed the season in ASA & is in the US for the Chili Bowl.
Picked up his maiden win mid year in Michigan: http://www.michaelpickens.com/default.asp?articleid=126 I'm hoping for a better result than Michaels rookie of the year effort in 2005 when he finished 6th. There are 200+ entries this year. |

Yep, good result for both the Kiwi midget men.
Will Michael race at Avalon (Vic) anytime soon? See Kasey Kahne won the B Main & placed 18th in the final. Good luck in 2010 Michael. |
