Hungarian Grand Prix 2015 - Weekend Thread
At just over halfway through this 2015 season, the Magyar NagydÃ*g at the Hungaroring in Budapest marks the final Formula 1 race before the summer break.
The first Hungarian Grand Prix was pre-Formula 1 world championship, in 1936 in Budapest and held in Népliget, the largest park in the capital. It was won by Alfa Romeo and Tazio Nuvolari. The first race of the modern incarnation was in 1986, it has become more highly regarded as time has gone by, somehow surviving on the calendar where some may have expected it wouldn’t. This will be the circuit's thirtieth consecutive Grand Prix; only Monte Carlo and Monza have hosted more consecutive races. It can be tremendously difficult to pass here, but it has also thrown up some fascinating and enthralling races. High downforce and therefore sometimes simplistically described as ‘like Monaco without the houses’, it actually has some long, winding corners, which lend it a relentless nature; in Sector 2 particularly, there is little respite for the drivers. The downhill Turn 1 plunges tight-right, with another straight the critical preparation on Lap 1 for a sort of hairpin at Turn 2, several approaches meaning passes are possible here on the opening tour. After then shooting around 60 degrees right, a straight takes the drivers uphill before the quick left, Turn 4, is soon halted by a tight right, Turn 5. The track then heads into a quick chicane with a 90 right and a much more open left on the exit, daring drivers to push harder to gain more time through there. After a left at Turn 8 and the 90-right Turn 9, the track sweeps through 10, goes 90 right at 11 and 12 and then goes into two long hairpins to end the lap, a constant test of balance and throttle control as drivers wait to eagerly stamp on the throttle again. The DRS detection zone is just before the final of these and there is activation on the start-finish straight and just coming out of Turn 1. In the last ten years, only three drivers have won from pole and the last driver to win the race and also win the drivers' championship that year was Michael Schumacher in 2004. First-time winners at the Hungaroring include McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button, Heikki Kovalainen (his only Grand Prix win) and Damon Hill. It was, in fact, Damon who was the star of the slightly bizarre 1997 race, which he so nearly won for Arrows before lugging the car home runner-up. There were few Bridgestone-shod teams in that first year for the Japanese manufacturer and that day the Bridgestones were the tyres to have. Damon came within a whisker of a win, a hydraulic pump failure three laps before the chequered flag giving him an intermittent throttle and only third gear at his disposal. In 1990 Thierry Boutsen held Ayrton Senna at bay for lap after lap to provide himself with his final win and many people, rather unfairly, with fodder to say it’s too difficult to overtake here, instead of congratulating him on a decent defensive drive. After all, just a year before, Nigel Mansell started 12th and scythed through the field to take the win. Button’s first Hungarian Grand Prix win in 2006, and first Grand Prix win overall, was from 14th on the grid, the furthest back anyone has won at the circuit. Another notable race was 1998, where Michael Schumacher was ordered by Ferrari to build an enormous lead (24 seconds) in order to emerge from his final splash-and-dash stop ahead of McLaren’s David Coulthard. He managed 27 seconds. Last year, one of the stars of the season, Daniel Ricciardo came through from 4th on the grid to take the last of his three 2014 wins. It’s quite a different picture this year, as Red Bull have been struggling. Formula 1 will no doubt arrive in Eastern Europe with the death of Jules Bianchi very much in mind. The Frenchman is the first driver to die from an accident at a Grand Prix weekend since 1994. That the severity of the talented Marussia driver’s accident was as a consequence of a recovery vehicle being in the run-off area rather than a ‘conventional’ high-speed crash, a danger that should now have been largely removed due to the virtual safety car rules, does nothing to reduce the sense of loss. Lewis Hamilton comes off the back of a British Grand Prix win and has collected five of the nine winning drivers' trophies going. Despite this, Nico Rosberg remains just 17 points adrift in the drivers’ championship, a not insurmountable points margin. Mercedes have, however, been rather dominant, with Ferrari’s Malaysia win, in the second Grand Prix of the year, proving a bit of a false alarm for the Brackley-based team, who have not been challenged since like many expected. There is the occasional whisper of a threat, though, notably from Mercedes-supplied Williams at Silverstone who bungled their strategy to have any hope of breaking the stranglehold. The constructors’ points leaders top the championship by 160 points, with 371 to Maranello’s 211. The Hungaroring is also considered one of the better races for spectators, with the hillside banking providing a good view of the circuit. really nice intro
so many great races over the years. race recap link to Mansell's 89 win here. must admit that in 97 i was rooting for JV (im Canadian eh!) so from my point of view it was a real miracle win for JV and us. 2011 might be my favorite though. |

Not a great fan of the circuit. I suppose that from a driver's point of view, it's challenging to drive. I do admit however, there have been some decent races there :-
1986 - Piquet was on fire. Maybe, it was that differential? Anyway, he overtook his teammate Mansell and Senna(twice) - and gave us one of F1's best overtakes. 1989 - Mansell's best race win. Coming from 12th and taking Senna with a backmarker. 1997 - Damon Hill's nearly win. 2006 - Jenson's first win. 2011 - Jenson in the wet/dry again. 2013 - Lewis' first win in a Mercedes. |

I had a bacon roll, but Perez's looked scarier.........
Wonder if he's changed his mind about what happened now he's had a chance to see the rear suspension break......? |

Great intro! Dare I say it, but it's certainly one of the traditional circuits on the calendar these days, and it does occasionally throw up a decent race. It will be interesting to see how the Red Bull and Williams cars perform over Quali and the Race.

I guess I should thank Perez for letting me get at least something right in the 2015 time capsule...

Finally amazing how overtaking was possible without DRS. It's just a matter of the aerodynamic regs being right. |

It would be nice if this race didn't go the way of so many races this year.

The ultimate irony there is that the tyre tethers were brought in as a safety measure, yet it seemed in Perez's crash that they launched the car when one of the tyres got underneath it during the accident.

DAMN how loose are these cars? Lotuses, Massa, even Rosberg is all over the place.
Grosjean 4 seconds behind the Marussia! Quali could be REALLY mixed up! |

In the end - quali about what you'd expect - Grosjean did well to get into Q3, Jenson unlucky with electric power failure costing him a Q2 place.
Encouraging signs from Red Bull......might make a race of it...... (Tho Lewis couldn't resist showing his customary 0.5 second advantage..... ) |

Slam dunk win for Hamilton tomorrow. Think it'll be a very standard affair, sadly.

It probably will but DR in the Red Bull is quick off the mark normally.

It does appear so
If we take the leading PU qualifiers in Australian Quali: Hamilton 1:26.327 Vettel 1:27.757 Ricciardo 1:28329 and the leading PU qualifiers in Hungary Hamilton 1:22.020 Vettel 1:22.739 Ricciardo 1:22.774. Then the percentage behind the Mercedes are Ferrari 101.66% or 1.430 secs, and Renault 102.32% or 2.02 secs behind in Australia and Ferrari 0.88% or .719 secs and Renault .92% or 0.754 secs behind in Hungary. So it would appear that they have closed up, and Renault has closed up on Ferrari, just whether or not Mercedes are sand bagging is the only question though. |

It could also just be an anomaly because of the tyres and type of circuit it is. The constant curves and general bumpiness seems to negate the Mercedes power advantage and favours a chassis with higher down-force like Redbull.

McLaren's hopes turn out to be false hope again. However there's still a race to make amends

What a start by the Ferraris and Hamilton in the gravel but he manages to rejoin the race.
