SEAT a no go?
SEAT could scrap plans to enter the ETCC over the row over the Geabox. The gearbox in the Toledo is too week for the series and they want a change to a racing box. BMW are against the measure but the FIA will look at if using a racing box would lower costs and over rule BMW, which would please Alfa Romeo and Volvo.

Why do BMW always get to rule everything. 2 Manufacturers are wanting it changed, SEAT make it three. And BMW still get it their way

Because BMW is the ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE!
 As well, I think that many race organizers, all around the world, know that their race series very existence or large fan support base is largely a result of BMW's support? You don't want to bite the hand that feeds you. This sounds like very negative/corporate/big bad business thinking, but I think in BMW's case, it holds very true. BMW has always enthusiastically supported touring car racing around the world. I guess they expect some "favours" in exchange...

Hey Startline1, you don't happen to run a hotel in Torquay do you?
I don't really think it does a series good when teams expect "favours", but I guess Seat is also asking for a favour. In Group A days they were allowed to homologate an alternate gearbox (the Jag V12 didn't even have a 5 speed manual!), and there could be a case for allowing that. However, the danger is that if you let Seat do it, then everyone wants to, so you need some way of stopping the costs getting out of control. What's wrong with the Seat gearbox anyway, does the whole thing need replacing or would it help if they just beefed up the internals? Isn't there a decent gearbox somewhere in the VW group they could use? |

I have to disagree alfasud.
SEAT is in a way expecting a favour(as are BMW) but the FIA already have Volvo and Alfa Romeo on their back wanting the rules changed. I believe that it'll be cheaper with racing boxes. All the teams have to do is go and buy a racing gearbox at 'xx' price instead if trying to develop and also breaking a lot of their own geraboxes intended for road use. Which spirals costs out of control. |

If 3 manufacturers want the rule change compared to one, then i think the rule should be change, however the majority of the cars on the grid are BMW's, so you can't really afford to p1ss off a manufacturer with that committment. Whatever happens, i don't think Seat would enter the BTCC, but stranger things have happened.

something slipped my mind in my previous post.
For next years ETCC, aren't the original 'Super 2000' regulations meant to be adopted, which included sequential gearboxes? |

Despite my seemingly negative comments, I agree, with 3 manufacturers asking for change, the organizers have to seriously consider this proposal. Would they rather want another manufacturer or one less?? hmmm, in theory, they can't lose, if they lose BMW, they still have 3 manufacturers. OTOH, BMW is fielding 6 cars...
But you know what, you can bet that the organizers are agonizing over this very debate too!!! They're probably going over the very same arguments!!
