BMW to move to 4 cylinders

BMW, who ran a 6 cylinder engine this year, should switch to a 4 cylinder unit neext season in a bid to match up with Alfa Romeo. That should improve their straight line speed so it could be harder to beat BMW next year even with the 30kg penalty.

Well that's no fun!

The 6 cylinders sound sweet.

I know the old BTCC 318s and M3s only had 4 cylinder and sounded nice, but nothing like the 6 cylinder.

Apparently they also want to run an M3 too![which would allow them to use the 4-cylinder] I thought only cars with at least 4 doors were allowed to enter the ETCC?

There is for sure no BMW M3 for ETCC, or will be ever.

The only 4 cylinder engine in the BMW range available is one with no throttle body. Its all done by electronics on the valve train. This i could see as being a problem.

Isn't the current M3 a 6-cylinder anyway- 3.2 litre? I'm pretty sure that only the original 1980's (E30?) M3's were ever 4-cylinder....

Unless BMW has changed their minds and will produce a M3 sedan? But as I discussed this on the WC thread, the M3 sedan will beat the M5 sedan. Speaking of M3s, BMW NA has announced they will race pair of M3s in the World Challenge GT class against Corvettes, NSXs,Audi S4s.
