The "Shannongate"
Folks,
Recently Mekola posted a message indicating some similarities between the demise of Brand Motorsport and the disappearance of the Shannon Group some years ago - that he quite accurately called "Shannongate". Does anyone know what - or who - was the Shannon Group? That was undoubtedly a very strange chapter on motorsport sponsorship. Shannon even got involved with Formula 1, via Forti Corsi. Piero Gancia, co-owner of that team, is very tight-lipped about the whole Shannon affair and does not want to talk about the subject. It seems that everybody else ever involved with Shannon has an alike attitude - what makes the Shannon Saga yet more spooky... |

Is this the case where a team or sponsor was using the cars (fuel tanks to be more precise) to transport drugs around Europe? Not sure if it was just an allegation or if charges were ever brought. Aparantly, an F1 team and some minor formulae were involved.

There was an allegation that F1 teams had been smuggling drugs around Europe, but after an 18 month investigation by police no evidence was found.

So that would explain what eddie jordan said in Monaco last year about finding crack in the chassis.

The Shannon operation was apparently owned by a company called Finfirst. The following (source Autocourse 1996/7) had links with Shannon - what other series did they run in?
F1 - Forti: Team disappears midseason. F3000 - Danielsson (running Tom Kristensen and Luca Rangoni) : Kristensen took pole at Pau but (like Forti) the team disappeared midseason. Kristensen did a few late-season races with Edenbridge. Italian F3 - RC (Andrea Boldrini): Boldrini took the title despite financial difficulties resulting from the Shannon problems. |

Autosport's copywriting machine (it couldn't possibly be a human) often refers to teams like SARD (Jap GT Team) as being 'crack'...

What was the name of the Italian F3 team that won many races a few years ago, was then accused of cheating ( bent engines I believe) leading the team owner to dispose of his cars by cutting them up and scrapping them? It really did happen, honest!!
