Whatever happened to..?

It's astonishing how quickly young drivers in the junior formulae can go from the Next Big Thing to yesterday's news. I offer as examples:

Toshihiro Kaneishi
James Courtney
Ryo Fukuda
Andre Lotterer
Peter Sundberg

Will we see any of these in top-line single-seater drives, or has the fickle finger of Fate moved on?

Well, Lotterer in driving for Satoru Nakajimi in Formula Nippon and GTs, but since his brush with Jaguar, I haven't heard him linked to any F1 teams, and his CART opening with JAG seems to have fallen through. It seems odd that, for example, Marko Asmer is testing with Williams-BMW while competing in FFord, whereas Kaneishi, Fukuda and Sundberg all won F3 championships, and appear to be off the F1 radar. Fukuda was with BAR for a while but I think has been dropped.

Fukuda was quietly dropped by BAR at the end of last year I think. He's currently in FNippon doing not very well (only 1 point after 5 rounds.)

Heading to Japan isn't a total disaster though, guys like Salo, Irvine, Firman and Frentzen made it to F1 from Nippon, so maybe Lotterer, Kaneishi and Sundberg will get someone one day.

totally agree with that...especially for lotterer, he will find the backing one day to get to cart...and he´s still very young...

but sundberg is in f3 a bit too long, he was there 5 years i think...but maybethe can get to japanese gt championship, you´re payed for racing there, and dont have to bring money, which is definately a good thing

But Formula Nippon - Ralph Firman notwithstanding - isn't the F1 nursery it was in the mid-1990s. Takagi went BACK to Nippon after failing in F1 and is now profitably employed by Mo Nunn in the IRL, but I doubt we'll see him in an F1 car again. Satoshi Motoyama, the runaway championship leader in FNippon, is a career-Japanese driver - doubt he'll race outside Japan. Lotterer might break out, but Fukuda's career has fallen apart badly for a man who won the French F3 title and tested for BAR. Courtney needs to win the All-Japan Formula 3 championship and then get out of Japan - F3000? Dallara Nissan? CART? - if he wants to progress.
