Towards a National FF1600 Series
Can I point you towards this topic on www.clubff1600.co.uk
Matt Beer has compiled a very interesting piece. I do wish to take issue on one of Matt's points though. ".... Snetterton, Rockingham, Pembrey, Lydden and Anglesey haven’t attracted strong enough FF1600 entries in recent years to justify national championship dates ....." The last FF1600 event at Anglesey attracted 33 entries and usually is in the high 20s' |

Any National FF1600 would need a quality, committed and passionate co-ordinator. A mini-vote at Roickingham last week saw your formal nomination for the post dizzy.

It would have been a mini, mini vote.
Was the meeting held in a phone box? |

No, the outer paddock where they crammed the FF1600 masses, that is six cars.
You were unanimously elected, although one smaller person, with wizard-like qualities, abstained from formally recording a vote. |

I am guessing as much!
Seriously though, I think this is a great idea, although I wouldn't do it as 8 rounds as if someone was top commit to that many they would have to do just that as a c'ship, and so it woudl dilute the regional ones. 5-6 would be much better at prob: Rockingham Cadwell Park (of course) Silverstone GP Brands Hatch Donnington Combe (only because the carnival is already part of KOK) Just an expanded KOK with 5-6 rounds quite a few of the front runners could comit to that as well as there chosen regional c'ship, be it SOM, Southern, Combe or NW ( like a NW'er would actually put themselves up against the "cream" of the nation) It would be a like a national "cup". |

No should be 4 rounds at Mallory, Silverstone, Mallory and Mallory!
Seriously 4 rounds at Rockingham, Thruxton, Brands GP, Silverstone GP (prefer tracks unused by FF1600 (from now on)). |

I would do it if it was 4 rounds that take part within the regional championship races.

I really really hope you guys can get it together for a UK championship. Some of the zetec racing has been good ( not great), but not a touch on the fantastic pre-zetec kent days!
Make kents the new FF championship. So what if the engines are old - would the fans in the stands (or watching TV)really care? While they are at it - bring back 1-litre formula 3 with downdraught carbs, no wings and 10 car slipsteaming battles for the lead! |

get FFord to go back to FF1600 type regs, with sidepods, ACB10s and introduce a new 1400/1600 motor that would be compatible speed-wise and fit-wise with older Kent engines for competitive racing. Strong National championship supported by strong regional championships, back to 80 plus at the Festival etc.
Justin I love Cadwell but I was trying to be realistic for all not just for me! |

When I worked at Royale (near Bedford) in the 70s Thruxton was a 4 hour trip. Now with M25/M3 its 2-3 hrs. Brands was a nightmare - a journey right through central London across Vauxhall bridge. There were 2 heats and a final in FF in those days, they all had to get there somehow and they did. Where has the 'can do' spirit gone, David Kennedy living in his transporter from March til November for example? |

Thruxton's less far for you than Brands (oh, you're not going there either!) and I've done it from Birmingham (about 130 miles) in not much more than two hours...

I love Formula Ford 1600 have done since going with my Dad to help a friend race in Pre'85. I can't afford to race and I work weekends so I can't watch much but watch out for reports and results. In my view to do a National series is a major commitment be it 6 rounds or sixteen. It must be considered FF1600 drivers come in all shapes and sizes, some want a career and some want one day of fun at at weekend. A national series will need both. My view is that races aside from the Walter Hayes, Festival etc. need to be on the bill with a regional race and that the entry cost is sensible. Offer one day meetings so that costs will be limited ie no motorhome or hotel is necessary. Remember Motor Racing should be fun. Make it a day out for the racers and their families. If the family enjoy going they will look forward to the next race. If you want I will ask my mum! She knows what it is like to travel the country following a Formula Ford car in all weathers and she has never sat in one. Think about more than the racer themselves FF1600 should be available to all. It used to be exciting when a one circuit specialist could have a crack at the visitors when the national series visited. This might seem a load of tosh and only my views but I sincerely hope you guys can make it can work. It can work it just needs thought. I am happy to offer opinions from someone who has no direct involvement. Oh and you gotta have Cadwell its brill!!

Having a nat series on the same day as a regional meet only helps those who would be at that meet anyway, plus it means you can't use neutral tracks. If it was stand alone you also get that "special event" "buzz" you woulnd;t get if it was diluted with a regional one.
That said (obviously I am thinking outloud here) Your right, its a big thing to comit to, even if its only 5-6 races, also if it was the same day as a regional, the locals could join in and boost the grids. Swing and roundabouts I guess! |

...and bring the national series back to Mallory, Cadwell wherever. These package meetings (toca) etc have ruined the british racing scene.
