I really loved the sound of the old Super tourers especially the low grumble of the Audi's and BMW's.
Will the cars sound different now the tech regs have been changed? I hope they sound better/louder than the group B cars - they sound so weak and weedy. My guess is that they will sound like the 2WD rally cars. |

Surely there is a fancy BTCC Common part to do with making the car sound better.
Any information from insiders at Vauxhall, Peugeot, Lexus, Alfa Romeo etc, would be greatly appreciated. |

They should sound the same, they may have less horsepower but it should be the same. Well you have to wait and see!

I hope Mr.Larsen is right-i loved the sound of 20 super tourers revving their engines up as the lights went red at the start of a race-it sent shivers down my spine! production cars sound just like my dads 1.6 2000 astra-thats not how racing cars should sound!

I think they'll will probably sound more like the Class B's than the touring cars of old.
The engine's arn't even going to be dry-sumped this year. Plus the gearboxes arn't Mag any more, their Ali and weigh 20 kilos more, so you probably won't get the old whining noise we're used to from the in car shoots. I don't know what the deal is with the exhaust, and how big they can be. But the noise limit regs are the same as they were last year. |

I think they're going to sound remarkably like the cars of old.
The exhaust system is not a regulated 'common part', and I think the diameter looks similar to last year. As Didderly says, the noise regs are the same. The only difference is slight drop in power. As to the gearbox whine, this will stiil be there. They are still using sequential systems, aren't they?. As long as they are using racing boxes, and they'd have to if they're going to last, they will be straight cut. Lots of whining, and not just from the drivers! |

the new regs mean that all cars will have fairly standard gear boxes i.e. "H" box, just like last years b class cars this is all part of making the races more exciting for spectators as the drivers have to concentrate on changing gear more than they used to meaning closer cornering and also meaning that the best drivers will shine rather than the best cars!

Accepted, but surely the gears will still be atraight cut?
Even club circuit cars use SC/CR gear sets... |

Er, kristof14, I've done a bit of investigation, and I'm afraid you are mistaken. The gearbox for the 2001 season is to be a sequential six-speed, standard for all competitors.
I take this to mean Touring and Production. I suspect you were describing a 2000 season Class-B gearbox. Right? |

No kristof you are wrong, the group A cars use Sequential Shift boxes, like years past.
PS does anyone know what kind of shifts lever they will use. Will it be a paddle (like vauxhall) or a lever like the old Renaults. |

I reckon they'll stick to... er, stick! Levers have got to be cheaper, surely? |

I don't know, the old Renault (and Honda, Audi etc) ones used to be attached to the floor of the car. But the Honda of late and vauhall of late and the Volvo post 97' have all used steering column shifts.
try going to http://www.hewland.com (i think) they sell racing gearboxes to a lot of CART, F1 and Super touring cars. |
