Anything I should know about rally photography?

Going to some rallying for the first time this weekend, should be able to get pretty close to the action, any tips on photography? Does it differ in anyway to circuit racing? etc...

I found it just the same really - not much extra to say... it's much more fun than shooting at a circuit...

I have in my mind that time when Tommi barrel-rolled over the heads of several spectators and landed upside down at the bottom of a ravine in a pile of rocks. Scary stuff!

I'm also out in the woods this weekend. I have done a bit of rallying since the track season finished last year and IMO there is not a lot of difference, the main thing is that there are no fences and Armco barries in the way.

The main thing I would say is fun and experiement.

Find the BIGGEST tree or VERY solid object and hide behind it! and NEVER stand on the outside of a corner or the large multi coloured whizzy things will get yer!

Right... it's on an airfield, so I think trees might be a problem... but I will stay on the inside of corners!

Back in the 80's I was Secretary for the Isle of Wight stages rally we had to recover a car in Parkhurst Forest which was stuck about 15ft up a tree!

We "lost" another one that had gone so far off in the stage we could not find it in the undergrowth!!!

Great stuff Mike - looks a bit dark - always difficult to shoot when its really overcast - never sure if you should use a bit of flash... probably not...

I have been out and about today, I was on the Riponian Stages up in North Yorkshire. I had a bit of a knightmare at Lightwater Valley, the shutter speed was to low so everything has come out a bit blured, but the weather at 8am this morning was awful . I then headed of to a forest and got much results.

You must have been standing near to me for the first 2 stages at Lightwater, got to agree about the light early on it was pretty bad, I stayed at Lightwater all day as I had to be there for the presentations and it wasn't that much better in the afternoon.

Having previously been in charge of the media at the rally of queensland, the best thing you can do is use some common sense.... but that is often lost on some people. Don't stand in a place where it would be possible to get hit, I doubt too many folk could outrun a rally car flipping through the air! Besides, give yourself an escape plan or an out option

Most rally courses are reasonably long, there are lots of photo opportunities, so there is no reason to put yourself in a stupid situation. Go and recce the course, figure out the itinery, and you should have a whale of a time!

I remember at a rally last year, there was one cowboy who thought it would be bright to rest on his belly in the ditch on the exit side of a cattle grate. Of course when the third car came through completely crossed up, airbourne for a decent amount of time, and landed about a foot away from his head, he decided it wasn't the best place to stand!

Yeah .... turn the lens away when they pass...... stones can prove to be a very expensive addition to it
