That area on the left of the track as we view it should surely be flattened out?

With that bump the way it is, anyone going off there is headed for disaster.

true, and from some guys i know that race there, the bump is bigger then before since the access road there was improved with the track improvements this year. But the ALMS, and Speed World Challenge guys made it through this year without a problem. that aside, I do agree that it should be removed since it does not seem to be protecting the drivers from the access road edge.

It is unbelievable that a minor 4-off turned into such a violent shunt! Mid Ohio is a widely used track and should be shut down until they fix this problem. Imagine this shunt in a Champcar?

That's a horrible looking crash, I'm amazed he walked away with just a few minor injuries.

I guess that's the problem with bumps away from the track, you don't know how bad they are until you find one.

It isn't related to the car or series you are in. It is a fairly odd place to go off, but there is always a chance...

As you say removing does seem a good idea!

There's a longer interview at: http://www.grandamerican.com/News/Article.asp?ID=6724

Turns out it wasn't petrol but oil running down his back, though, so they needn't have stripped him naked and hosed him down.

I read elsewhere that the GT cars are going about 140mph (225kph) at that section of the track.

However, if the `bump' was NOT there, the car would probably have continued to slide on the grass, down the hill and across the racing surface.

There is no `good' solution to this without permanent barriers (w/tire walls) and who knows what else to restrain the car at the initial point of impact.

It did cross the racing surface though.

I'd prefer it had crossed the racing surface with four wheels and tyres still attached and everything properly functioning....

I saw it, and was horrified, yet sickly amused/astounded at the same time.
Glad he's alright, but it definitely proves my theory that you can't make a car go from airplane to submarine in the same movement.

Can see your point bear but it did still cross the racing line - upside down....
