New Volkswagen F3 engine to race this year
It has been announced in Germany that a new Volkswagen F3 engine will race in the F3 Euroseries later this year. The full story is here.
Although it doesn't say so there, the thinking is that the engine has been developed by Spiess. It will be interesting to see how it goes. VW are brave to take on Mercedes, but don't forget that it took Mercedes two or three years to reach their present position. Personally, I'm all in favour of anything that stops Formula 3 becoming Formula Mercedes. |

Every race has been won by Merc, because all the best British teams have decided to go with them not NBE. Which is shame... Money I guess... |

Interesting how VW-Audi is making noises about developing young talent like Mercedes, this could really benefit the Euroseries if money is coming in from both brands.

bit of a long shot but does any one know the bore and stroke of this new VW F3 motor?....or does anyone know what VW donor engine that Spiess are using?....does anyone recognise the block?.......I'm thinking it will be a 1600 that will get stroked out?
the main reason that Mercedes are so competitive in F3 is because they have a shed load of torque compared to the opels, Renaults and Hondas.........all originating from their small bore and very long stroke engine layout.......if I remember rightly the merc F3 motor uses a 82.5mm bore.......which is stupidly small for a 2 litre motor........but it obviously works I wish the LMP1 engine builders would learn from this and build a V12 along the same lines.......the torque would be a great help in taking on the Diesels Last edited by knighty; 19 Jul 2007 at 07:29. |

It'll be interesting to see what NBE come back with next year then, if anything.
This years A class engine will surely become the new B engine, in a de tuned form I suppose. They are advertising for an Engine Designer in Autosport, so maybe they will try and challenge the Merc next year?! |

Its old and out dated. Plus it would mean dallara having to produce new bell housings and engine mountings to get it in the car, whereas the current A class already fits.
+ I have it from good sources that this will be the case. |

I didn't know VW and Toyota were in, or even thinking about the F3 business until this thread. As a fan of both, thanks. I will follow the progress with interest. Carry on.

Going to be the next fashionable thing, next year the must haves will be a Dallara F308, VW engine, Alpinestars racewear, spiky hair etc...
But should be a great scrap to see the VW and Merc lumps going hhead to head - I just want to see the New FIAT (Abarth), proper (Jap) spec Honda, and Jap Toyota engines racing agains the German metal... Some more chassis would be nice too. |
