BEST WAY TO SELL A HISTORIC RACE CAR?
Like a lot of people, I find it much easier to buy cars as opposed to selling them. But needs must, and I have decided to sell one of the 'stable', otherwise the other projects won't ever get finished.
So what's the best method others have found...... On the verge with bit of paper inside the screen? Well known auction website? Private ad in glossy or glossies? Specialist race car website? Live auction at an event / show? Any other way? |

Race cars direct for race cars
If you want it to get noticed, flea bay has the broadest field of view . . .. just put a classified ad in, it's cheap, and generates interest/enquiries . . . . I offered to help a customer sell an LC road car via a facebook page, got 5 decent enquiries for him in 2 days. I've sold 4 Cortinas in the last 3 years, all within 24 hours of listing on fleabay. |

I think that RCD is ok if the car is a modern and expensive racer or an FIA type Classic, but if it's more of a club race spec car then I'm not sure it's the right place anymore.
The Bay seems to be a good place to generate interest. You could also try this web site, http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/cat/21/ which always seems to have lots of race cars for sale these days, "Motorsport Auctions" seems to be gaining popularity, as does putting your ad on Facebook and letting your own contacts share it around. Finally, you could place the car with someone like Cheshire Classic Cars who will do all the advertising for you, for a fee/ %... What are you selling? |

I keep seeing Racingpal.com adds when viewing Tenths. A site partner.
If the potential market for the car has a European focus it might be worth investigating |

Thanks, some food for thought there..... (Ignoring chigley )
Don't think it's appropriate to say what the car is on here, that would amount to free advertising. I'll take heed of Johns comment, so next challenge is to get a proper handle on market value! Think that's the difficult bit..... |

Very rude of me- what I should have said is 'ignoring Chigley's suggestion'.....
John, I've checked the forum Q&As and as the discussion is on how to sell rather than selling, think may be OK! Sure Tim will soon let us know if not. Don't think it's something that will float your boat anyway, it's my Gp1 Escort touring car that had at Goodwood last March. Edit-.Thanks Tim, just didn't want to broach any rules! |

Mike It's already been said - but I don't believe the auction route is the answer, very few competition cars seem to realise their value this way, although I've actually bought 2 competition cars at auctions! I think that "word of mouth" is one of the best routes, spread the word wherever you can and you may be lucky. Otherwise think of where you look yourself. The Car and Classic website has to be a good option as it doesn't cost anything and clearly has a wide audience. Race Cars Direst seems an obvious one, but I've yet to hear of anyone being successful via this site. I've just sold my Lotus Eleven which I had previously entered at the Goodwood Members auction in March without success. No critism of Bonhams who were excellent. But the simple fact was there was no-one actually bidding on the day. I used one of the specialist firms at Bicester Heritage - Pendine - and got the result I wanted. But the main message is that it is likely to take some time.....so have patience. In the meanwhile, I'm sitting here in front of a roaring open fire while the wife is watching the 'Strictly' Christmas Special. I've got something more important to do - think about how to spend the proceeds of the Eleven sale. I feel another project coming on. Last edited by Brian A; 25 Dec 2015 at 18:54. Reason: Spelling |

Thanks for responding Brian. I have taken note of Mr Ruston's and your comments on patience being required!
After the world gets back to normal, first job will to be get info up on the popular websites- the ones I would normally look at! |

I think Brian and Johns suggestions are both great, for a sorted car, road or race, the other websites and online auctions etc are more appropriate for projects.
I wouldn't know where to start if I wanted to sell PEA, or One of the (finished) Tornados. |

Of course, advertising it at that and getting that are 2 different things, but it's a start. |
