What weekend toy to buy?
Decisions, decisions..
Im moving in with my girlfriend soon which is going to release some equity.. she actually suggested getting something special.. probably as a weekend toy. Insurance would favour a classic despite my attraction to something more modern. My budget is £18k max and we dont currently have a garage which is a bit of a problem seeing as a Caterham R400 was at the top of my list.. My current wishlist.. Caterham R400 Mk1 or 2 Escort RS Evo VI to VIII RS.. STI Spec C E30 M3 Evo R5 Gordini Turbo... maybe What would you choose and why.... also please feel free to add to the list. |

For me, it would have to be an M5. 500bhp, looks aggressive yet understated, quite happy on a run to the shops yet still has loads of power if you want some fun.
As you are moving in with your girlfriend, an M5 can "future proof" you as it has a decent boot for strollers and loads of space on the back seat for baby chairs . How many times do we see M3's etc for sale "due to impending arrival of an ankle biter"? |

For 18K I would suggest an Evo IX GT and have it modified to give 400 BHP. Evo IXs can be be bought for about 16K now and a tuning package consisting of exhaust, filter, uprated fuel pump, boost controller and ECUTEK remap will see 400 BHP and about 385 lbft for a cost £1.5K incl.fitting. Have a look at www.lancerregister.com, lots of members cars for sale and downloadable buyers guide.

How about a 2nd generation Renault Clio V6? Pretty fast in a straight line and handle like they are on rails, either that or a top of the Range Vauxhall VX220, should keep up with the Impreza's and Evo's of this world with no trouble.

No garage is what makes it tricky. Can you park on a drive/offroad somewhere out of the way where you could put it under a car cover?
Next, it kinda depends what use you want out of it. Is it just for road use, country lanes and weekend trips kind of thing, or more of a trackday toy? That might dictate how practical you want it to be. An R400 would be awesome on track, but not exactly ideal for a weekend away. Personally, as a weekend toy I would forget practicality as far as you can. I think I'd probably be looking at Elise/Exige/VX220, maybe BMW Z4 or Boxster. Again personally, if it was a classic at that budget it'd be a 911. |

E30 M3. Fun car to drive and easy to work on if need be.

Ford Mustang
Mk2 Escort RS2000 in Black Whale Tail Sierra Cosworth if you can find one Vauxhall/Holden Monaro - assume you'd get one for 18k or less now? Has to be something with a bit of character. There's no point having millions of horsepower you can't use. |

Always wanted a red Porsche 944. Once I get a house with a garage, that might be the first thing I get before I get furniture for the house. The next car would be a Monaro.
In the USA after 25 years you can import anything you want as long as you can make it road legal in your state. A 1981 Ford Falcon 351 Dick Johnson replica would be perfect. |

I'd go with my American colleagues here. The E30 M3 is still something special, and a Porsche 944S2 is a superb piece of kit, and beautifully built. You should have some change from 18k on either, but particularly the Porsche, to help towards insurance and maintenance costs.

Congrats Paul! Ours was due aug 24th as well (although he was early on the 12th!) What did you get in the end? Or are you still looking?
I'd suggest an Audi RS4 Avant (I personally prefer the older B5 model). Or if you want to be a bit different, a Mistubishi Legnum VR4 or Nissan Stagea Practical, tons of room (all estates) for baby paraphenalia and a bit rapid! |
