Ekström gets WRC Skoda drive

Skoda confirmed earlier this week that DTM champion Mattias Ekström will drive a third Skoda Fabia in selected events in the WRC 2005. Ekström will get Jan Kopecky as his co-driver during all of the rallies. Head of Skoda Motorsport, Martin Muehlmeier, said to Autosport:

“Our priority in the past few weeks was to finalise our main driver line-up. Having secured the services of Armin Schwarz, Janne Tuohino, Jani Paasonen and Alex Bengue we were then able to turn our attention to the drivers we wanted in the third car.

“Once again we have decided to give an opportunity for young talent to show itself on the World Championship stage. Mattias will contest the Swedish Rally as it will not clash with his DTM commitment and we will finalise Jan´s precise programme once the season has begun.”

Well, Stephane Sarrizan has got some good results in an older Suburu, so maybe Matthias' talent can cross over, although I'd've though gravel would be tougher than tarmac.

He won group N in Sweden, he does seem pretty handy, although he's not going to have the ebst machinery under him, but top 6 should be on i would have thought

I bet, he'll be faster than Armin Schwartz.

Has Ekstrom ever been given a go in the R8?

No, he hasn't. Would be nice to see, as would it to see him test for the new Red Bull F1 team. Ekström's main sponsor is Red Bull after all...

I suppose talent always shines through. Quite a different discipline though. Good luck to him.

Ekstrom was exceptional in the 2004 DTM, so to see him star in rallying as well will be very special.
