Turkington Fan should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Mirror question

As a European really getting into V8 Supercars thanks to the increased TV coverage here, I've noticed that the cars only have 1 external mirror. I know it's a silly question, but I wondered what the reason behind it was.

Some do have two. It's a driver's personal choice thing, I think.

Despite the Aussie rules saying they are supposed to have two, the category managers for V8's have deemed only one is required.

I think the decision was made on the grounds of safety - less glass on the road when they geet knocked off!

I'd say it would be because of aerodynamics, beause a lot of those that have them, they are special mock ups that have air ducting into the car to cool the drivers down.

I personally think it would be best to have two big standard ones, but then they would probably purposely knock them off on the way out of the pits...

Sorry Rhys - even I had to laugh at the suggestion it was due to aerodynamics.

That's like saying they don't run indicator and stop lights to save weight....

Careful - lose it too often and the stewards will bring you in for a five minute penalty

Hrmmm, I'm not totally convinced. Knowing how anally retentive most of the teams are, and knowing the expense teams like DJR go to to make trick little mirrors that have air ducts built into them, I wouldn't let it surprise me..

The air ducts are usually located around the mirror not as part of it.

Got any pics to illustrate what you mean?

Ouch.

I was hoping for the reverse, and for people to raise enough money to pay for my bail

Hehe - never.

Easiest way would be to become a Steward and attend a V8 meeting - just penalise errrr no sorry - of course that doesn't happen

I believe the tiny mirrors on V8s are actually due to weight savings and aerodynamics. It's a fact that adding a set of rear view mirrors can actually make a significant increase in the drag co-efficient. Also, an experienced race car builder tells me that the way to get weight out of a car is simply, one little bit at a time.

Except that when they are fitted they are not small - they are standard Falcon or Commodore shape and size
