I think to change it you'll have to take the drum off

It's no big deal to take the drum off. Don't be hesitant to do it. If things need to be cleaned they need to be cleaned. 7-8 hours is plenty of time to need to do it and my guess is that it is actually the drum not the shoes that needs cleaning.
The one thing I have seen a few kids do that is a no-no is to apply chain lube at the front sprocket and squirt it through the drum holes in the process. Don't do that. EVER. Always at the rear sprocket. A large screwdriver and a 17mm, along with a can of good brake cleaner is all you need (except for the tools you need to slide your engine back and remove the chain (probably and 8mm hex and the 17mm). Be sure to put a very small amount of lube on the roller bearing during reassembly. We do this procedure at least as often as we change our chain (every second outing minimum). A clean kart (all of it) is a happy kart. |

As Flatspot says it is no big deal to remove the drum for cleaning.
This is a part of our normal maintenance after a days running. At the same time clean and relube the bearing that the clutch drum rides on. |
