2010 Indy 500 Qualifying Thread
Just thought I would get this up and going so that the "2010 Indy 500" thread doesn't get to be gigantic.
If the sunny and warm forecast for tomorrow is accurate, the luck of the draw for qualifying positions could have a big impact on who lines up where within the 24 spots to be filled on Saturday, or if some cars that could get into the 1st day lineup miss out and come back on Sunday. In past years, teams would qualify from 11 a.m. - about 1 p.m., depending upon how warm and sunny it is, then wait until after 4 p.m. to get back in line, because the heat at this place can cost you anywhere from 1 to 1.5 mph per lap. With this new format, that luxury is not an option...Initial qualifying ends at 4 p.m., with the "Fast Nine Pole Shootout" scheduled for 4:30 p.m.-6 p.m. Thus teams who want to get into the top 24 will have to run during the hottest portion of the day to set a 4-lap average and hope that it holds up for the weekend, if they are the slowest on Saturday... Remember, they start the fastest 33 on Race Day...That 24th qualifier on Saturday could be on the Bubble when the field is initially filled, and competitors who are trying to "bump" their way in could do so late in the day on Sunday, when conditions could be more favorable than the 24th qualifier had on Saturday. That has always played a big part in the strategy of this place... Enjoy the weekend of qualifying action. I sure will. |

Here's a great photo bank, the only things that were evident to me:
variety of front wing endplates. How can it be possible that, on identical cars, one shape was not identified as best for the Speedway? If nothing else, don't you slap on what the fast guys are using? Same for rear: Penske cars and one or two others have a different shape rear endplate. There is a shot of Graham Rahal's car, and the body fit of the sidepod covers looks way out of whack compared to all the others. If you see anything in the pics, please call it out. http://paddocktalk.com/news/html/story-136140.html |

At this moment, the day of TK is probably over...less than three hours is not enough time to repair the car...can he jump on the other cars that turned a lap during this month but are not in the field yet, like 43 or 37T?

good to see "the King's" colors and number out there but not a good go for John Andretti.

Well, TK and Sato both crashed on their 1st qualifying runs, so they are not in yet. Of the big names, Paul Tracy did not make it in today either. If I remember correctly, he got bumped and then waved off his 2nd attempt.
Jay Howard made it in for a while, but got bumped, too and then waved off his 2nd attempt. Sarah Fisher herself surprisingly didn't have a try. And didn't Alex 'Pink' Lloyd get bumped, too, at one point? Both Foyt cars of Vitor Meira and AJ the 4th got bumped today as well. John Andretti is not in yet either. And the #33 car of FAZZT Racing did not show up. ---- The positive surprises for me were Alex Tagliani, who is probably the man of pole weekend at this point. Also Graham Rahal and Ed Carpenter, who both made it somewhat unexpectedly into the Top 9 despite this being their first race with their current teams. Bea Figuereido surprised me as well by being the woman with the best grid spot. I had thought those honours would go to someone else. But Bea has done it again - just like in Sao Paulo. Kudos, too, to Bertrand Baguette for making it in on the 1st day in P24. Honorable mentions go to Hideki Mutoh and Townsend Bell who both showed that they have what it takes to drive a Newman/Haas car or a Ganassi car by delivering a good performance. |

It's nice to see a large crwod for this Pole Day...
Now, how many positions of this Pole Day could be bumped in the Bump Day? Maybe Danica cannot be sure with her speed, for example... |

Not bad show either. I was hoping they would bother Danica more she was so visibly scared, in contrast to Ana Beatriz F. But what an effort by Tagliani naturallythe big red team of penske and ganassi are up top. Poor TK and the whole andretti squad really how could they get the set up
so off? I feel this highlights not just the droning engines but the dallara chassis is showing it's age in many places inconsistent laps even by the top squads. after G.rahal found one of Fisher's tubs dAmaged and flexing 35% more thanthe standard at the last race I wonder how inconsistent the build quality has been or is inthe final car? Andretti racing seems to be affect no one there is that slow |

IMS Radio
Finding the audio hard to put up with, I've spent more time listening to PSAs than I have commentary.
