Le Mans 1999 trap speeds
Does anyone know the top speeds for any of the Vipers and Porsche 993 Turbo's and 996's at Le Mans in 1999?

could not find any exact data about them but most probably they were around 300 km/h. i expect everything above 290 km/h and under 310 km/h... that's where the fastest GT cars always are, from 1999 on. before 1999 you could find faster gt1's, as gt1 was the top category, along with the lmp's.

in fact, i think that incident added an incomparable amount of spice to that superb race of 1999. not that i wish the drivers or the teams for such catastrophy, but it really was spectacular and it reminded people that there still is a little bit of danger in sportscar racing... which basically makes it more interesting
i was kind of surprised to see the audi r8c hitting 349 km/h, more than any other car except for the toyotas, including the bmw v12 lmr and the equal of the mercedes clr. i remember the audi r8c had some handling problems, which slowed its qualifying time to about 3:42. but i think if audi uk would have had more time to develop that car, it could have been just as fast as the mercedes on the entire track as well. and it wouldn't have become airborne either |

It was also vastly better looking than any of the open Audis which followed it - IMO.

Thanks for digging this old thread up. At the time I posted a similar question in the scgt forums at racesimcentral. Someone got the GTS and GT speeds from the yearbook:
First number is practice speed, second race (km/h) GTS #50 Chrysler Viper GTS-R 308/296 #51 Chrysler Viper GTS-R 315/304 #52 Chrysler Viper GTS-R 316/296 #53 Chrysler Viper GTS-R 315/301 #54 Chrysler Viper GTS-R 307/291 #55 Chrysler Viper GTS-R 312/286 #56 Chrysler Viper GTS-R 314/300 #57 Chrysler Viper GTS-R 311/293 #60 Porsche 911 GT2 299/285 #61 Porsche 911 GT2 308/296 #62 Porsche 911 GT2 303/291 #63 Porsche 911 GT2 300/284 #64 Porsche 911 GT2 307/298 #65 Porsche 911 GT2 308/275 #66 Porsche 911 GT2 305/295 #67 Porsche 911 GT2 303/294 GT #80 Porsche 996 GT3 301/286 #81 Porsche 996 GT3 303/287 #83 Porsche 993 RSR 268/- #84 Porsche 993 RSR 278/268 To be honest I was quite suprised by the speeds attained in practice. I didn't think the Vipers could hit 310+. The GT Porsche 996's suprised me as well, quite fast in practice. I didn't think cars from that class (which is now GT2) could hit 300 until a few years ago, but it seems they could right from their inception. Quite a large disparity between race and practice speeds as well. |

yup to be honest i'm quite amazed too of the practice speeds. this means i should begin believing that the gt1 porsches went 330 km/h in 1998 in practice, although i the race they didn't reach more than 310 km/h, the '98 toyotas 345 km/h and the '94 dauer 962, 365 km/h.
by the way, thanks for posting them! |
