Glad to see Michael come out of that one unscathed. Anyone who thinks that NASCAR stockcars AREN'T the safest racecars in the world, deserves a hard shot to their privates.

When I first watched McDowell's crash, the first thing that popped in my mind was how eerily similar the angle and speed were to the horrific Gordon Smiley accident at Indy in 1982. That's never a good thing to think when one witnesses an incident. Thank God the kid's alright.

Hell of a shunt, I'd heard it was big but...

And he just walks away!

Huge huge shunt, a real testimony to the CoT, HANS device and SAFER barriers that he was able to walk away...the initial hit was the really bad part much like the Kubica shunt last year, the rest looked spectacular but there weren't any major impacts/sudden stops.

After watching McDowells wreck numerous times, I have realized that the main element of the rear wing, never came off. So much for the drivers thinking it would fall off in a majour accident, haha.

Unbelievable that he walked away from that . I cannot even imagine how he must have felt in that car.

Indeed having the SAFER barriers brought in via the IRL has been a great development, although I think the car takes most of the credit here. Good to see him ok.

Why no SAFER barriers on the inside of the back straight?

i thought after the publicity earlier this year NASCAR was saying they were installed just about everywhere they could be?

We saw the tape with just the sound of the accident, and he was doing all sorts of major impacts. Things happen when you unload at 180 mph.
